Which I totally did not do… oops! Driving the Highway 1 in
New Zealand is as beautiful as driving Highway 1 in California: beautiful
coastline, small roads, and some good driving music make for a lovely entrance
to this coastal town nestled next to the mountains.
We may not have eaten crayfish, but we did visit the seal
colonies at the southern end of town and were able to get up close and personal
with a mum and her pup. The rock formations on the coast were mostly limestone,
which formed this really cool “pancake-stack” like structures.
We also ate at a top-notch café in town with probably the
best long black [that’s an Americano for those who do not know] we had tried
throughout our entire road trip. I was also pleased to finally find an adequate
sausage roll and an incredible steak/mushroom/cheese pie. Laugh if you may, but
I am of the opinion that if you really enjoy a food/drink that is not available
in your own country, you should consume it in mass quantities while you still
can!
All in all, Kaikoura was beautiful and lovely even under the
cloudy weather!
